In 1981 the actress, model, and singer Jane Birkin was on a plane traveling from Paris to London next to her was the President of Hermès, Jean-Louis Dumas-Hermès. She was with a big straw bag filled with all the things she needed to carry for her small daughter, Charlotte. The bag fell and all the items were on the floor, after she took everything inside, she explained to Jean-Louis that it was very difficult for her to find weekend bag she both liked and found practical, nice handbags weren't big enough for her needs as a mother, and big bags weren't trendy enough. During the flight they idea was developed and in 1982 a first design was created to finally be reused in 1984 when the Birking Bag was born.
