In the 16th C in France passemanterie tassels were made from the finest materials. There was a huge production of them as all the palaces and nobility houses, were considered empty and ordinary without them decorating brocade curtains or cushions. They became so important they were an speciality for the artisans, who to build one up would have taken several weeks. This trend last until 18th C in Europe, when not too much ornamentation became the new style to follow.

Nowadays tassel still recall the opulence and rococo style from the past. Like fans, and gloves, tassels will always connote a symbol of distinction between the social classes.
